PostSecret and the Apology Project

PostSecret is a project where people mail in homemade postcards with their secrets on them. Some of the secrets are quirky, some really, really sad. Many of the postcards are interesting as art.

The project reminds me very much of the Apology Project, conducted by Allan Bridge from 1980 to 1995, using a telephone line which people could call to apologize for anything at all. Allan Bridge gave a presentation in Spokane in the early 80s about the project, and it was gripping, and sometimes frightening, listening to the recorded apologies from the project answering machine. Some of the apologies that he received can be read on the Apology Project web page. They also have archived recorded apologies available on cd. Not for the faint of heart.

In 1997, This American Life featured recordings from the Apology Project. The episode can be heard online. It is the final segment that deals with the Apology Project.
