Color Photos of the Great Depression

These early color photos from the Farm Security Administration were taken when my mother was a child, in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Like many people, I’m a great admirer of the iconic photographs of Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and other photographers of the era, but it’s remarkable how much more real and immediate the scenes and people feel in these photos in color.
